Update from the 81st Regular Session:
Three extraordinary leaders joined CPRIT this year: Bill Gimson, a 35-year veteran from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as Executive Director; Dr. Alfred G. Gilman, a scientist and Nobel Laureate, as Chief Scientific Officer; and Dr. Rebecca Garcia, a healthcare and medical education professional and former Vice President at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as Chief Prevention Officer.
With this incredible team, CPRIT is ready to issue the $450 million in bonds that will pay for research and prevention grants over the next two years. Rep. Patrick Rose worked to secure the $42 million in general revenue needed to fund the bonding over this biennium–a great start towards the scientific advancements and economic benefits that will result from this $3 billion project over the next 10 years.

During the 80th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature, Rep. Patrick Rose joined four of his colleagues in authoring House Bill 14 & House Joint Resolution 90 to create the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, a historic investment towards easing the burden that cancer places on our health care system. By building a coalition that included the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society and KillCancer.org (an organization created in honor of Gov. "Texans are united in the fight against cancer with the historic passage for Prop.15 last fall—a $3 billion investment for cancer research and prevention. This new Institute is focused on finding cures for a disease that burdens our health care system and devastates too many Texas families.” Rep. Patrick M. Rose
