State cancer institute to announce first research grants

Tomorrow, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is scheduled to announce the recipients of its first round of research grants. The grants will be “multi-million-dollar” awards, said institute spokeswoman Ellen Read.

Texas voters in 2007 approved a constitutional amendment authorizing $3 billion in bonds for cancer research and prevention. Public and private entities in Texas can apply for the grants.

The announcement is scheduled to take place at the Texas State Cemetery. But don’t try to read any symbolism into that location. Read says the cemetery was chosen because the cancer institute could use a meeting room there for free.
