Texas cancer institute awards 1st research grants

Texas’ new cancer institute on Wednesday awarded its first round of research grants totaling $61 million to 15 institutions including the University of Texas at Austin. The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas was created through a constitutional amendment touted by cyclist Lance Armstrong and approved by Texas voters in 2007. The amendment authorizes $3 billion in bonds for cancer research and prevention over 10 years.

State cancer institute to announce first research grants

Tomorrow, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is scheduled to announce the recipients of its first round of research grants. The grants will be multi-million-dollar awards, said institute spokeswoman Ellen Read. Texas voters in 2007 approved a constitutional amendment authorizing $3 billion in bonds for cancer research and prevention. Public and private entities in Texas can apply for the grants.

Cancer drug developers bring promising research to Texas Tech

Strengthening their commitment to adult diseases, the researchers moved last year from a children’s hospital affiliated with the University of Southern California to Texas Tech’s Health Sciences Center, which was expanding its cancer program.

Sweetening the deal was Proposition 15, a 2007 amendment to the Texas Constitution setting aside $3 billion in state funds for researchers working on cancer.

Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Awards Grant for 1st Scholar in Cancer Research

AUSTIN, TX (December 9, 2009) – The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has awarded its initial grant for a First-Time, Tenure Track Faculty Member to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. The $2 million, 4-year grant will be utilized to recruit noted researcher Dr. Ralf Kittler to establish a fully independent laboratory focusing on the study of prostate cancer beginning February of 2010.
